ITerating 2.0 is live!

We’ve been working on this new version for a long time, so happy it finally went live last week!

While we have received great feedback on the previous site, we felt that the information could be organized better. For example, long, detailed wikipages about products were hard to find and therefore rarely seen. We moved them as the default pages for all products. We’ve also added things like “see also” and “direct alternatives”, to bring a lot of interesting info one click away.

Another big change of course: we added some google ads as you would expect - that’s how we can keep the site free for users and vendors alike.

Your feedback very welcome as always!

Good news, Gartner says you’re dying

Matt Asay has an interesting post on a recent research note from Gartner Group, about how commercial software vendors are starting to feel the pressure from SaaS and open source vendors.

There’s something odd in hi tech: companies always have their best quarters after it becomes clear to everyone that their business model is outdated. Maybe it’s the last land grab, like in war right before peace is about to be signed: sales people and their clients load up on the stuff, as they know they’ll have to move on to something else next.

Sun Microsystems stock price hit its peek at $253 in August 2000, when it was clear to any industry insider that it could not sustain its position against commodity-based linux and windows servers. It’s now trading at $19.

So Gartner announcing pressure on commercial vendors probably means some great quarters ahead for commercial software vendors. Pourvu que ca dure, as Napolean would say…

Android: much ado about not much?

Google made a big splash announcing their free, open source platform for mobile phones. According to the WSJ, it could change the entire business model of the industry.

I’d be a bit more cautious. When you see statements of this kind:

“Android breaks down the barriers to building new and innovative applications. For example, a developer can combine information from the web with data on an individual’s mobile phone — such as the user’s contacts, calendar, or geographic location — to provide a more relevant user experience.”

you know there’s trouble ahead. Successful platforms such as DOS/Windows or Facebook may end up looking like all things to all people, but they always start by serving very well a narrow, precise need, be it word processing or college dating. What’s Android’s killer app?

I asked a friend at Vodafone when the number one cell operator will sign up. “I’m waiting to see the first Android-powered phone” was the answer. Sounds like a wise strategy…

The Fight for the (Web) Corner Office Has Begun

Today Microsoft announced Office Live Workspace, providing the ability to store and share MS Office documents online.

Bill Gates declared:

“Amazingly, it is easier to find information on the web than it is to find information on the Microsoft Corporate Network. This inversion where a public network solves a problem better than a private network is quite stunning. This inversion points out an opportunity for us in the corporate market. An important goal for the Office and Systems products is to focus on how our customers can create and publish information on their LAN. All work we do here can be leveraged into the HTTP/Web world. The strengths of the Office and Windows businesses today gives us a chance to superset the Web.”

He did say that. Only, he said it in May 1995, in his infamous “Tidal Wave” memo. So what the f** has Microsoft been doing for 12 years?

Their lack of action has created a market vacuum that google and start-ups like zoho have finally filled. Even OpenOffice would have had a much harder time had MS made Office the amazing online product it could have been in the last 12 years.

Well, maybe it’s not too late. Microsoft has shown many times that, unlike the Hare in the fable, it can make a roadkill out of any Tortoise on its path and come up victorious. Only this time, they’ll have no-one else to blame but themselves if they don’t.

Software Industry to swallow its own medicine!

We just announced last week the availability of all our content in RDF format. To access it, go to any product page, and click on the link “RDF/XML” at the bottom of the page.

Our RDF descriptions use a combination of several ontologies, including “DOAP” (Description Of A Project), “review”, “FOAF” and “brr”, a vocabulary we created with the openBRR.org guys - openBRR stands for Open Business Rating, it is a new, standard methodology to evaluate open source software, see http://www.openbrr.org .
I’d like to thank Tim Berners-Lee, Kingsley Idehen, Susie Stephens for their help at the July Cambridge Semantic Web Gathering, Edd Dumbill for his help with DOAP and Danny Ayers for his help with review.

Our goal is to convince all the software repositories around the world to endorse RDF to exchange data, using existing ontologies just like we have. Keeping up to date on all the changes in the software world is a huge task, and the only way to do it is through automation - setting up server to server services with news an updates. The Semantic Web provides the perfect framework and tools to do that.

It’s about time for the software industry to swallow its own medicine!

Facebook API a winner

A few weeks ago, FaceBook released its API, enabling thousands of developers to build applications directly targeting its huge user base.

Frankly, I’m as annoyed as anyone by Zuckerberg’s arrogance, but you have to give credit where it’s due: they’re doing things right over there. The API is very well thought out. It’s simple yet powerful.
It lets developers focus on their application without worrying about the user management part. In a way, it’s as if FB provided a huge open LDAP: taking care of all the user management functions in a central, unified way. Basically, FB does what it does best, manage users and networks, developers do what they do best, create interesting apps.

There are 2717 applications listed on FB right now, many of them have already reached millions of users. Sounds like a big winner!

04-17-2007: ITerating is live in version 1.0!!!

I’ve been working on the idea of ITerating since May 2005, almost 2 years ago. In these days when an average CS student can pull out a Ruby On Rail site in a couple of days, you may ask: what took you so f** long?

Well, we didn’t want to build just any site. We wanted to build a useful and cool site.

We wanted ease of use. We wanted interactivity with other sites. We wanted to support standards.  So for the foundations, we endorsed the Semantic Web approach and built everything on RDF. No walled garden here, content flows in and out.

Then we re-worked over and over again the UI and the design. Re-thought this button on the left, this data bit in the back. And again. That’s part of the reason we chose the name ITerating: taking incremental steps towards perfection.

Finally we have something we’re proud of, http://www.iterating.com

I hope you’ll like it too. Either way, post a comment and give me your feedback!
